In my pre-kid life, I never imagined that someday I would be a stay at home mom - hey, I didn't go to graduate school to spend my days changing diapers. But when I held my first baby, I had a complete change of heart. As soon as we locked eyes, all those career and financial worries faded. They didn't disappear, but they certainly became secondary. I have tons of friends with similar situations. They are not clones- today's stay at home mom may be a tattooed rock singer, the CEO of her own company or a green living activist but they all have something in common; a deep desire to be there for every moment of their babies lives, the good, the bad and the messy.
If you are considering life as a SAHM, both sweet rewards and tough challenges await. Read on for insight and advice.
Bye bye pearls and casseroles, today's at home mom is launching an at home business. There are 10.1 million women owned businesses in the US, says the Center for Women's Business Research. No firm stats exist on how many are run by stay at home moms, but it stands to reason that the percentage is increasing in the WIFI age. "Over 90% of moms want flexibility," says Ellen Parlapiano, co-founder of mompreneursonline.com. Another big change is acceptance. In the past, moms have been reluctant to tell clients they work from home, now its commonplace, even respectable. Mom owned businesses, which used to be heavy on arts and crafts, now run the professional gamut from web design, attorney, marketing guru, social media, coaching, you name it.
Blogging about her life and reaching others. Plug mom bloggers into a search engine and you'll come up with thousands. Jen Singer, the New Jersey mom of two who created mommasaid.net says her blog averages 90,000 views per month; it's not a huge moneymaker, per se, but it has led to book deals, speaking engagements and endorsement offers - none of which would have happened in the pre-internet era. "mom bloggers are hugely influential because they represent authentic voices of other moms" says Jennifer James, founder of mombloggersclub.com.
Making a living from a blog is tough, but there are other perks, "moms who pen really great blogs are heavily courted by brands to review their products."
A 2007 Pew Research Center survey shows that more at home moms today (48 percent) consider being home full time the ideal situation than they did 10 years ago . Just 21 percent of working moms says working full time is ideal. Many of these young women look at their baby boomer moms and question why they'd want to be them. That's doesn't mean today's SAHM has abandoned her career aspirations or traded her Blackberry for an ironing board, just that she's more concerned about living a balanced life than proving she's Superwoman.

Drop Down Crib Debate, What do you think?

Margie McGlone brought one key item into her nursery when she was pregnant last summer. It was her sister's crib, one they both loved and looked forward to keeping in the family.
"I thought it'd be cool for my son to have grown up in the same crib as his cousins," said McGlone, whose older sister had held onto the crib through three moves after her children outgrew it.
Then McGlone got nervous, learning that millions of drop-side cribs were being recalled after at least 32 strangulation and suffocation deaths were linked to them. "I was like, wait a minute, this is a drop-side," said McGlone, of Bronxville, N.Y.
Her niece and nephew had been fine in the crib, an antiqued-white model with painted gold accents. And the company had a kit to make the sides immobile. But as a new-mom-to-be, she was too worried, especially after seeing depictions of the potential hazard — a baby's head getting stuck after a side detached.
Though nervous to break the news to her sister, she took apart the beloved heirloom and bought a crib with stationary sides for her son, Finley, born in November.
"I thought, I can't in good conscience — knowing they're all being recalled and all being changed, I can't keep it. I can't use it," she said. "Every time he was in it I wouldn't feel comfortable."
More than 10 million drop-side cribs were recalled in recent years, culminating with the Consumer Product Safety Commission's announcement in December that after decades of use, the sale of drop-side cribs was being banned.
Starting in June, it will be illegal to sell a crib with a side that moves up and down, a once-common feature that lets you reach in and pick up a baby with ease.

Starting Infants on Solids Before 4 Months Raises Childhood Obesity Risk

WebMD Health NewsReviewed by Laura J. Martin, MD Feb. 7, 2011 -- Starting infants on solid foods before the age of 4 months may dramatically increase the risk of childhood obesity.

A new study shows that formula-fed infants or infants who stopped breastfeeding before 4 months and started eating solid foods before 4 months of age were six times more likely to be obese by age 3 than infants who started solid foods later.

However, the timing of introducing solid foods was not linked to obesity risk among infants who were breastfed for at least four months.

Researchers say childhood obesity is the leading public health problem facing children, and these results suggest that prevention strategies starting in early infancy may be needed.

"The first few months after birth may be a critical window for the development of obesity," researcher Susanna Y. Huh, MD, MPH, of Children's Hospital Boston, and colleagues write in Pediatrics. "Parental feeding practices during early infancy, such as the timing of solid food introduction, may be one key determinant of childhood obesity."

A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies, what it's like inside the family, and whether they could do it too. Well, I can tell them, because I've done it. Here are some things my daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to do:

• attend a sleepover
• have a playdate
• be in a school play
• complain about not being in a school play
• watch TV or play computer games
• choose their own extracurricular activities
• get any grade less than an A

"Where's the restaurant we're meeting at?" Your husband's on the phone as you scramble to finish a last-minute client proposal and root around for your lipstick. You give him directions while reading the five e-mails your boss just sent and trying to decipher the "something came up" text message from the babysitter. Multitasking has practically become an Olympic sport. But new science suggests it's not always a winning game.

A recent study in the British Medical Journal, for example, found that people talking on cell phones while driving were four times more likely to have car accidents resulting in hospitalization than other motorists. Road safety may be an extreme example, but it underscores a larger point. Research shows that we consistently perform better and faster when tasks are done successively, rather than all at once. A new study is shedding light on why. "We've identified a kind of bottleneck in the prefrontal cortex of the brain that forces people to address problems one after the other, even if they're doing it so fast it feels simultaneous," says René Marois, PhD, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Vanderbilt University and coauthor of the study. "This explains why previous data shows brain activity going down instead of up with each new challenge—it's like a mental traffic jam." Unfortunately, life isn't slowing down. The recent news about 17 year old Chelsea King and 14 year old Amber Dubois causes all of us to think about what can be done to protect our children.
Stop Child Predators is an organization working to pass legislation for mandatory prison terms for sexual offenses against children, including life imprisonment and the death penalty for repeat offenders. Stacy Rumenap, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, founded the organization five years ago after 9 year old Jessica Lunsford was abducted, raped and killed by a two-time convicted sex offender living across the street from her home. Ways You Can Help Quake Victims In Haiti

WASHINGTON, Wednesday, January 13, 2010 —
The American Red Cross is sending money, supplies and staff to Haiti to support relief efforts there after yesterday’s earthquake, which caused catastrophic damage and loss of life.
According to reports, as many as three million people may have been affected by the quake, which collapsed government buildings and caused major damage to hospitals in the area.
The Red Cross is contributing an initial $1 million from the International Response Fund to support the relief operation, and has opened its warehouse in Panama to provide tarps, mosquito nets and cooking sets for approximately 5,000 families.
You can send a contribution to the American Red Cross for disaster relief in Haiti on your cellphone. It will take a lot more than this, but it's a start. And it's easy: You can text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti. They send back a message asking you to confirm, and that's it.
Or you can go to the website for the American Red Cross and send a donation online.

I got news today that an old friend is dying of a rare disease. She has just days to live and will leave behind 3 children under the age of 10. Hearing that news suddenly puts everything into perspective. Suddenly the little annoyances and big problems we face during the day seem very small.
Yesterday a little girl was at the clubhouse and asked her brother what she should get her mom for her birthday. The little boy said very matter of factly, just give her a hug, she will love that.
Her mom would love that. We all need a hug these days.

However, I cannot sustain a business only for the sake of changing the baby-parent interaction. After two years (with a down economy) of telling my husband that I can pull off the Work At Home Mom situation, a deadline approaches our family in making some decisions.

I need to have 8 clients enroll in classes by September 30th. One of the popular locations for my classes is Java Mama and their location is shutting down while transitioning to a new spot. While I'm excited about the new place offering more and being bigger, this leaves my marketing window even smaller.

Just wanted to let everyone know that you can now watch the Chargers and all of your favorite programs at the Bonita clubhouse. That's right. We won our fight against Cox cable. If you don't know, Cox wanted to charge us an additional $35 per month as a public viewing fee. This is a new fee Cox is imposing on small businesses in San Diego. But here's the kicker, we could not cancel our contract without paying a penalty of hundreds of dollars.
The public viewing fee would have doubled our cable bill.
But Cox finally saw the light or got tired of my endless number of phone calls and let us out of our contract with no penalty.
So now we have Dish and the tv is back on! Hooray!
So, let the kids play while you watch the big game this season!
